Sustainable City Award

Sustainable City Award focuses on a holistic approach to sustainability in cities and considers different types of capital for a better future and sustainable development of cities in Poland. According to the Globe Award Polish Edition’s criteria, sustainable city uses the following types of capital:

  • Environmental Capital - natural resources (water, forest, energy, etc.)
  • Social Capital - relations and trust (conditions created by city which allow to build positive relations with residents, eg improvement of medical care accessibility, raising the area’s attractiveness by creation of places for residents, such as parks, green areas, sport objects)
  • Human and Intellectual Capital - innovation and social intelligence (city’s actions for innovativeness and education stimulation, eg scientific and research scholarships, cooperation with academic units, talent development programs)
  • Technical and Infrastructural Capital - Transportation and ICT (city’s actions towards sustainable infrastructure and ICT, eg hybrid buses, city bikes rental)
  • Culture Capital – city’s experience/ actions for diversity (events concerning minorities, other cultures, cooperation with partner cities, etc.)
  • Political Capital - confidence and public trust (level of trust and relations between residents and local government – meetings with politicians, percentage of residents participating in local elections, cooperation between residents and politicians, etc.)
  • Financial Capital - assets and money (actions taken by the city towards creation of appropriate business environment for city development – how the city encourages investors and international corporations to expand in the city)

City-applicant should describe one or more initiatives (projects, programs, processes) taken up in the last two years towards sustainable development of the city. The initiative described must use one or more capitals indicated above. It is recommended that the initiative engages more than one capital.
